Tomorrow we will find out who is going to win a 160GB iPod – the prize for the winner in the International Photo Competitions of Coventry University. You can see all of the photos on the offical Facebook page for international students: Coventry University International.

One of the potential winners is ex-Automotive Engeneering student, doing now MBA in Engineering management, Rohan Lakhlani. His ispired picture of children playing cricket in the street made him the fifth winner of the competition and “a proud owner of a University Hoddie” as written in the University International Newsletter. Here is his winning photo and an interview with Rohan revealing some details about his photo works and himself.

‘We’ve got speed, power and endurance..anyone who plays with us had better take out extra life insurance ! ‘

Rohan, where was this photo taken?

It was taken on a street in Mumbai.

What inspired you to take that particular photo?

It was the innocence with which the street children made use of the small area they found for playing cricket that allured me to click the picture. The passion behind the sport of cricket added to the charm.

Was is a set picture or you just took it, so to say, by chance?

By chance, they were playing, I was passing by, had the camera in hand and hence decided to capture the moment in its natural form.

What effects did you apply to the photo?

I reduced the colour tone in the pic, as it added a dramatic effect to the picture which looked nice as compared to the one which had bright colours in it.

I took a look at your photo collection on Flickr and I noticed most of them are colourful. Why the one
you won with isn’t as well?

Well, a colourful picture has its own charm with bright objects of colour in it. This picture had nothing as colourful to showcase in the surroundings and hence the tone of colour was kept to its low.

Is photography only a hobby for you or you have thought turning professional?

Only a hobby, never thought about turning it into a profession as my main profession and love will always remain automobiles.

Rohan shared that he likes much some of the other photos in competition “very good”, especially the one with a guy playing badminton, which he describes as “very good and natural”. In his opinion, “Coventry University should organise such competitons more often”.
