Cov Uni In Brief: Edition_8 (08.05.2013) TO BE UPLOADED

14 May

By Galya Dimitrova

This edition is recorded, however, it is still to e edited and uploaded, which we keep postponing because we were busy with work connected to the course.

We were in a bit of a rush while recording it because the radio studio has been booked constantly these days. But it will be up soon and I believe the outcome will be very good. From now on we will try to improve to add more and more in each session and hopefully, soon it will be much better than it has ever been.

In myopinion this was our best record so far. We behaved very professioanlly, were really straight to the point.

We had a quote from a person involved in a Student Degree show, which was one of the news pieces. This was all thanks to our own research, we made the contact, attended the event and I believe this is why everything went so well.

Overall, this is maybe our most “hard news” edition and I liked it. I wish in the furture we produce more showe like it.

We greatly enjoyed recording this one and it will serve as an example for us how we should record from now on.

It was another good show. I won’t say great, we made a few mistakes here and there, even though there is definitelyan improvement from what it was some aditions ago.

We didn’t particularly upgraded anything on this day, I would say we just enjoyed the edition and exersiced our skills. I believe this session was really helpful for our confidence as well and it was very relaxed so we enjoyed it and made it sound good.

After a long time of standstill, we came back with a really good edition. As we observed on the show, we hadn’t read such interesting news for a while.

We sounded relaxed and we hardly stopped the recording. It was going smootly.

The scripts were very nicely written and we didn’t struggle with them. I see it as a very good day and a very good show, mainly du to our good organisation and preparation.

What the previous two attempts had taught us was that plans might fail but the vision of the big idea never should, so we were happy we moved on and produced such a good edition in the end.

Cov Uni In Brief: Bad Days

14 May

By Galya Dimitrova

today-is-a-bad-dayThere are bad days in every profession. We can say we had quite a long bad period in our experience which resulted in a gap of not recoding btween the 26.03 and 10.04. We attempted to record two times and it turned out very bad. We had hardly any valuable news, we spend loads of time trying to record, then a technical error occurred and ruined even the little we had recorded. Overall, we were not at all concentrated on our work. I presume the reason was partly the not very satisfactory previous record, partly the lack of information we had because the Easter holiday was going on so the campus was not really lively.

But the good thing is that we didnt’r give up on it even though we were unfortunate a couple of times and moved on with recoding five.

The fourth edition was not bad in terms of news value but it was definitely a drawback in terms of the scripts adaptation. It was like we forgot all we had learned from our radio training! So many passives, so many long sentances! No wonder we struggled so much while reading them.

It was a really important lesson: Never forget the basics and mind the audience!

Personally, I do not consider it a good edition – long, badly written scripts and total disharmony between us (me reading so fast with a really tense voice and Ioana reading more slowly, relaxed, with numerous pauses). It is true that is is an achievement that we had come as far as to create a fourth edition but it just amazed me how it was somehow worse than the official first one and even the mock one. I can’t possibly help my picky comments of that edition neither for Ioana’s performance or for my own one.

Edition 3 was more than brilliant! We had some great news to offer to our listeners: Islam Awareness Day, the Korean Cinema Talk in Warwick Arts Centre, No Smoking Day, the vsist of photographer Bertil Nilsson in ET and the Herbert War Reconcilliation Exhibition. I believe at this point we agreed that five news and a horoscope reading is enough agenda for us now, util we improve the structure.

However, no matter how great the agenda was, I think we could have ordered the news better. We need a more clear structure in the future, we need to improve on the reading technique as well. But the third week in a row of our professional experience was a fact and we couldn’t be happier. We started feeling more confident in term of our comments as well. At this point we were still reading all the agenda in the beginning, something that we stopped doing in the later editions because we considered it unnecessary. In terms of the visual layout, we decided to have the name of teh show almost all the video through and our names just for a couple of minutes.

A thing that we proved we upgraded this time was preserving the additional footage we had from Warik Cinema talk. In my opinion it was a piece well fitted into the show, it showed that we actually attend the events we report about rather than just copy information from various sources.

Learning outcomes:

  • If we personally attend the event, the quality of our comments will be better because it adds personal understanding
  • A good agenda cannot make up for bad organisation

Cov Uni In Brief: Edition_2 (08.02.2013)

The recording of the second edition didn’t run as smoothly as the first one. We made a lot of mistakes and we recorded for two hours instead of one.

Another bad thing happened as well – we lost the footage of Professor Chadwick’s interview, so we couldn’t use it anymore in the newscast. In that case, we had to rewrite the script to his news, record it again and stick it to the rest of the session. But at the time we were occupied with courseworks and this is the reason why we couldn’t do it and consequently, didnt put together and upload the second edition of the news show. I personally, found it very frustrating and wished we were more careful and focused that day.

So our seventh day of our radio experience taugh us two important things. First, EVERYTHING takes more time than expected, so we should be as focused and disciplined as possible; and second, put extra effort in preserving your footage, if you really want to keep it. However, I am grateful for that day and this experience, because it taught us to be more attentive and overall, it was a nessesary aspect of our career growing.

Cov Uni In Brief: Preparation for Edition 2

Having finished with the first recording and having learned a couple of things from it, we decided to make a deeper research for our stories. The first edition was a bit rushed, admittedly, so with the secon, we decided to take our time and concentrate better on the source material.

We were absolutely determined to insert a quote this time and make it more diverse. In order to do that, we needed an interviewee and an interesting topic. Browsing through a page with the upcoming events on campus, we came across the sports management lecture of Prof. Simon Chadwick. We considered a short interview with him will be approprite and will fit good in the concept of the edition – it is event based news, so the listeners would like to hear something from a person who attended it, or preferrably, from the one who hosted it.

On the actual lecture, we recorded bits and some background sound and after it, we approached Prof. Chadwick for a quote, which he kindly agred on giving. We added his story to the others we had gathered so far. We wrote the scripts and we were ready to record on the next day, 8th February.

What we learned from this experience, is that a direct contact with the person is important and necessary in many news coverages. Prof. Chadwick’s  quotation contributed a lot to the script itself and literally brought it to live.

The date 30.01.2013 will be always remembered as the day when our effeorts were crowned with success and we finally recorded our first session.

Suprisingly, it went better than I personally expected. We didn’t make many. We didn’t need a lot of stops to make it come together. The editing didn’t take that long given the fact that we hadn’t edited for a sound recordings for a while. Besides, we didn’t have quotes or vox pops to insert in , so it was basically one continuous record of us reading. We hadn’t reach to the point where we comment after each news as well, but after the show we had a talk about that. From the next edition we decided to add some aspects that would make it more entertaining, more student-relating and more informal.

I personally observed that my voice is still stiff and I didn’t apply all breathing techniques – decided to definitely correct this in the next edition. Ioana’s voice was much more relaxed, my only remark to her was that she should sound more lively and invested about what she is reading, otherwise it would sound monotonous.

But overall, we did well. Every beginning is tough, however, we made a start and this is the best achievemnt of ours for this year.

A link to the first edition that we first uploaded on Soundcloud but had to reupload on Youtube later. A more insigh on the reasons in the next post:
